Red Sox Defeat Yankees 5-4 in Thrilling Opening Day at Fenway
Marcus Thornton's solid pitching and a tenth-inning rally give Boston a morale-boosting victory over New York in front of a packed house.
The Boston Red Sox welcomed the New York Yankees to Fenway Park on a cool April afternoon for the 2026 season opener, with 37,421 fans packing the historic ballpark. Despite an early three-run deficit, the Red Sox battled back to win 5-4 in ten innings, setting a positive tone for the season ahead and silencing Yankees fans who predicted another dominant year in the Bronx.
Pitching Matchup and Early Action
Red Sox starter Marcus Thornton faced Yankees ace Clayton Kershaw in a highly anticipated matchup. Thornton, coming off a solid winter of training in Arizona, surrendered home runs to Aaron Judge and Juan Soto in the second inning, giving New York an early 3-0 lead. Through five innings, Kershaw was nearly untouchable, allowing just two hits and striking out seven Red Sox batters.
The tide turned in the sixth inning when Red Sox catcher Nicholas Rivera hit a two-run double off reliever Luis Severino, cutting the deficit to one. The game remained tense through regulation, with both teams missing scoring opportunities in the seventh and eighth innings.
Tenth-Inning Drama
In the top of the tenth, Yankees center fielder Mitch Garver appeared to break the deadlock with a single off Red Sox reliever Daniel Song. However, an aggressive throw from right fielder Trey McKenzie caught Garver attempting to steal second, allowing Song to escape the inning unscathed. The Red Sox capitalized in the bottom of the tenth when second baseman Chris Owens drove in the winning run on a sacrifice fly, sending the crowd into celebration.
"It's opening day. These games matter for momentum," said Red Sox manager Brian Hutchins after the game. "Our guys showed character coming back from three down. That's the kind of team I want to see all year."
Season Outlook
Preseason projections favored the Yankees, who spent heavily in the offseason to bolster their rotation and bullpen. However, the Red Sox roster also underwent significant changes, acquiring two new starting pitchers and a productive left-handed hitter. Experts view the AL East as competitive this year, with Baltimore also considered a contender after a strong 2025 season.
The Red Sox will play their next four games at home before heading to Baltimore for a weekend series against the Orioles. Thornton is scheduled to start the second game of the series on Friday night.
